A digital marketing strategy is not a list of channels. It is a series of argued choices: who you target, what problem you solve, through which channels you reach these people and how you measure the result. The final document can be short; its value comes from the data behind it and the action plan that follows. ## The three central questions - **Who?** A target that is too broad dilutes the message and the budget. Two or three precise personas are enough. - **What?** Which promise, which price and which proof (reviews, results, guarantees) for each of them. - **Where and how?** The channels where this target spends time, with a message suited to each decision stage. ## From assessment to execution A strategy is judged by its implementation. It must translate into a quarterly calendar, a budget per channel, an owner per action and a dashboard reviewed every month. Without this translation, it remains a document that changes nothing in real decisions. ## When to bring in a provider Bringing in an external consultancy brings a neutral view of results and a proven method. It should not replace your knowledge of the market. The best projects combine management's internal vision with a consultant's analytical rigour.

When this guide is for you

  • You invest online (advertising, content, website) without knowing what actually generates customers
  • You are launching a new offer, a new brand or a new city in Morocco
  • Your channels have multiplied and your team no longer knows where to focus the budget
  • You are preparing a fundraising round, a repositioning or an acquisition

Step by step

  1. Audit of what exists — Gather the real figures: traffic by channel, acquisition cost, conversion rate, sales and margin. Identify what works, what costs without returning anything and what data is missing.
  2. Market and competitor analysis — Study 3 to 5 direct competitors: positioning, prices, channels, content and organic results. Spot the gaps left open in your market.
  3. Defining personas and objectives — Describe 2 to 4 customer profiles with their problems, vocabulary and buying habits. Set 2 to 3 quantified objectives with a deadline (leads per month, maximum cost per lead, revenue).
  4. Channel and mix choices — Prioritise according to the objective, budget and sales cycle. In Morocco as elsewhere, one or two well-managed channels beat six half-managed ones.
  5. Action plan, budget and measurement — Turn the strategy into a quarterly calendar with owners, a budget per channel and a single dashboard. Plan a monthly review to adjust.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Starting from tools and trends before defining the target, the problem and the quantified objective
  • Setting vanity metrics (followers, impressions) unrelated to sales or leads
  • Copying a competitor's strategy without checking that its market, margin and resources are comparable
  • Launching every channel at once: none then reaches the data threshold needed to be optimised
  • Not involving sales: the leads generated are not qualified and the feedback loop is lost
  • Awarding less than 10 % of the budget to measurement and neglecting conversion tracking

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a marketing strategy and a digital strategy?

The marketing strategy covers the whole market, including offline channels (trade shows, press, billboards). The digital strategy is the online part: it chooses the digital channels, messages and budgets to reach the same objectives.

Does a small business really need a strategy document?

Yes, but not necessarily an 80-page document. Even a 3-person business benefits from writing down its target, its offer, its 2 priority channels and its 3 indicators. It avoids improvising every campaign and makes it possible to judge results.

How long before seeing results?

Paid channels (Google Ads, Meta Ads) give signals within a few weeks. SEO and content take 4 to 12 months. A realistic strategy combines a fast channel to fund visibility and a sustainable channel to later reduce dependence on advertising budget.

What advertising budget should the strategy be based on in Morocco?

Allow at least the equivalent of 1 to 2 months of spend to get usable data, often 10,000 to 30,000 MAD per month for an active SME. The ideal budget is calculated from the acceptable acquisition cost: margin per customer × conversion rate.

How long does it take to build the strategy?

Allow 3 to 6 weeks for an SME: one to two weeks of audit, one to two weeks of research, then writing and validation. A two-day scoping workshop can speed up the decision phase.
