Retargeting
Some links on this page are affiliate links: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Our approach
Retargeting is advertising's second chance. The person has already seen your offer and knows the brand: the message can therefore be more direct, and the cost per contact lower than on a cold audience. ## The segment matters more than the visual Retargeting every visitor with the same banner is the most common mistake. An abandoned cart and an article reader do not have the same need: the first needs reassurance about delivery, the second needs content that helps them decide. ## Limits in Morocco Traffic volume remains the limiting factor: on a small site, audiences are too small to be delivered. Moreover, many buyers go through WhatsApp or a shop, which makes part of web retargeting irrelevant: you also need to think about message-based follow-ups. ## Audience hygiene Capping frequency, excluding recent buyers and limiting the membership duration avoid paying to show the same ad again to people who are already convinced. When this guide is for you
- Your site gets traffic but generates few enquiries or orders
- You have abandoned carts or unfinished quote requests
- You already invest in advertising and want to improve the return on visitors already acquired
- You want to re-engage customers who have not bought for several months
- You are preparing a promotion or launch for an audience that knows the brand
Step by step
- Audit tracking — Install and check the Pixel and conversions (Meta, Google), remove duplicates and confirm that every event is recorded correctly before launching.
- Build segments by intention — Create separate audiences for abandoned carts, product page visitors, article readers and past customers, each with its own duration.
- Write per segment — Send each segment the message it needs: delivery reassurance for an abandoned cart, helpful content for an article reader, a special offer for a past customer.
- Launch on Meta and Google — Run small campaigns on both networks, cap frequency, exclude recent buyers and watch audience size before scaling.
- Add email and WhatsApp follow-up — Complement retargeting with email or WhatsApp follow-ups for carts and quotes, which are often cheaper and more personal.

Mistakes to avoid
- Retargeting all visitors with a single ad, when their intentions differ greatly
- Launching before reliable event tracking is installed, which targets the wrong people
- Never excluding buyers: you pay to reconvince customers you already have
- Running an audience for too long and paying for ad fatigue
- Neglecting follow-up by email or WhatsApp, often cheaper than advertising for an abandoned cart
Frequently asked questions
Does retargeting work without cold advertising?
It can work on its own, but results depend on traffic volume. On a site with few visitors, the audience is too small; you must first generate traffic through search, social media or a cold campaign.
What is the minimum budget?
1,500 to 2,000 MAD per month may be enough to test, as audiences are small. What matters is having proper tracking and sufficiently large segments.
How long do you keep a visitor in the audience?
From 7 to 30 days depending on the buying cycle: 7 to 14 days for an impulse product, 30 days for a more considered service. Beyond that, the conversion rate falls and cost rises.
Can you retarget people without a website?
Yes, with audiences built on social media: people who watched a video, interacted with a post or a page. It is more limited but useful for a business without a site.
Does retargeting replace email?
No. For an abandoned cart, a well-written email or WhatsApp message often remains more profitable and more personal. Retargeting complements it, it does not replace it.
