TikTok Ads: launching your first campaign without breaking the bank

TikTok Ads is TikTok's ad platform: it shows vertical videos, often with content that looks like an organic video, to an audience targeted by interests and location. A first test needs 3,000 to 10,000 MAD over two to three weeks, with several video creatives and measurement of cost per contact or per sale, never views alone.

TikTok is no longer the teenagers' network. In Morocco as elsewhere, it now brings together consumers of all ages, with a significant audience for fashion, beauty, home, food, training and local services. Its advertising has a particular feature: it looks like content. A sponsored video that looks too much like an ad is ignored; a video that tells, shows and demonstrates gets attention. This logic completely changes the way ads are produced. The entry cost there is lower than on Meta or Google: many Moroccan businesses make their first serious advertising test there because the minimum budget is more accessible. But a low budget does not exempt you from method: without conversion measurement and refreshed creatives, the money goes on views without turning into customers. ## Understanding the ad platform before spending The TikTok ad platform offers several formats. The most used is the in-feed video ('In-Feed Ads'), which looks like a normal video, with a call-to-action button to a website or shop. Videos sponsored from the brand's account also enrich the account profile, which strengthens social proof. The objectives are simple: views, traffic, conversion. For a first campaign, the conversion objective is almost always the right one, provided technical tracking is in place. Without a pixel or a correctly declared event, the platform optimises blind and spends on views with no effect. Targeting combines geography, age, gender and interests. Resist the temptation of ultra-precise targeting: the algorithm works better with a sufficiently large audience and creatives that naturally filter out poor prospects. ## Creatives that pass the feed test The format imposes rules. The video is vertical, often watched without sound, with an interruption possible at any moment. The first three seconds must give a reason to stay: a visible problem, a striking result, an intriguing question. The creatives that work best rely on real demonstrations, before/after, direct informal tone and subtitles. UGC videos have a central place: they look natural because they partly are. Refresh rate matters. An audience of a few tens of thousands sees the same video several times in a week; attention drops. Planning a new creative every week, or at least every two weeks, avoids fatigue. On-screen text must read in two to three words per line, with a bold font and strong contrast. Videos that show a price, a promise or a clear result from the outset hold attention better than those that build a long story: the viewer only gives a few seconds before deciding. You also need to follow the platform's rules on health claims, crossed-out prices, promises of earnings and violent content. A rejected video delays the campaign and costs learning time. ## Measure, expand, decide The key indicators are cost per thousand impressions, full view rate (often targeted around 15 to 25 %), cost per click, cost per conversion and revenue. Comparing them with those of Meta and Google Shopping helps allocate budget where cost per sale is lowest. A TikTok campaign is judged over two to four weeks. Cutting after three days interrupts learning and gives distorted figures. On the other hand, once the data has stabilised, cut weak creatives without hesitation and redistribute. For many Moroccan businesses, TikTok is not the main channel: it is a test channel that, on some products, becomes the first. A final point on landing pages. A TikTok campaign often sends fast, impulsive traffic: a slow page, a long form or a hidden price loses the sale within seconds. It is better to simplify the page for this traffic (visible price, call-to-action button above the fold, payment possible on the phone) than to increase the budget to compensate for an unsuitable page. Order management also needs anticipating: a successful campaign can multiply requests overnight. If stock, delivery or message replies can't keep up, success produces negative reviews and penalises the next campaigns. When this guide is for you

  • You sell a product that shows well in short video (fashion, beauty, home, electronics, food)
  • Your audience is under 40 and spends time on TikTok in Morocco
  • You want to test a local market with a small ad budget
  • You already have UGC or organic videos that work

Step by step

  1. Set up the account and the pixel — Create an ad account linked to your TikTok account, install the pixel or conversion API on your site or order page, then check that purchases or forms are correctly counted.
  2. Choose a single objective — For a first campaign, aim for conversion (purchase, form, WhatsApp message) rather than awareness. The algorithm optimises delivery towards people who act, as soon as the objective is clear.
  3. Build several creatives — Use 9 to 30 second vertical videos, with on-screen text from the first second, a current sound and a face. Prepare four to six different videos to let the platform choose the best performer.
  4. Target by geography and interests — Start with fairly broad targeting (main cities, interests related to the category, age matching the product) and avoid multiplying criteria. Over-precise targeting shrinks the audience and pushes the cost up.
  5. Measure and iterate — Track cost per thousand impressions, full view rate, cost per conversion and revenue. Cut weak creatives, gradually increase the budget of the winners and test a new creative every week.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reusing a horizontal video or a TV ad as is: the vertical format and the first seconds are decisive
  • Expecting results after two days: a campaign's learning phase takes one to two weeks
  • Targeting a tiny audience or a single city at the start, which prevents the algorithm from finding customers
  • Judging the campaign on views when the pixel isn't installed and sales aren't measured

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok Ads work for B2B?

Less naturally than for consumers, but it can work for training, business services and low-ticket offers. It requires highly crafted creatives and a well-defined audience by interest or profession.

Do I need a product page or a built-in form?

Both can work. A built-in form reduces friction and cost per contact, but contact quality is often lower. A well-made sales page, with the price and trust signals, usually produces better-quality customers.

How can I pay in dirhams from Morocco?

TikTok generally bills in foreign currency by international credit card. Plan for a card that accepts foreign payments, otherwise the campaign will be refused. Also check local invoicing and tax reporting rules.

What is the minimum budget to start?

A daily budget below 500 MAD doesn't let the platform learn properly. Allow at least 1,000 MAD per day for two weeks, with four to six different creatives.
